Multitrack recorders are dying faster than anything else in music production today. They are often times marketed to the lower end markets (beginner or hobby recordists) who did not have the money to buy a whole mini studio worth of devices needed to lay down some tracks. For that reason the all in one portastudio was once very popular.
However, since the advent of cheap and high quality recording interfaces it makes SO much more sense to turn your capable home PC into a recording device that is easily upgradable, allows for additional plugins to enhance your sounds, and flexible mouse point and click editing which destroys every portable studio on the market.
The Tascam 2488neo is a good recorder, by all means. It features 24 tracks running at full blown 24 bits. A built-in CDR, 60 GB HD, and 4 XLR inputs. It also connects directly to the home computer via USB. There is Unfortunetly only one situation in which a portable all in one multitrack makes sense - live recordings. Having to lug less gear around is the biggest advantage! But with smaller and smaller notebook computers running recording software this last area of usage is also dying. Expect these dinos to be off the market entirely in 3 years. Enjoy while it lasts!
