Review: Gibson Hummingbird Pro Acoustic-Electric Guitar
Style: Acoustic-Electric Guitar
Body: Dreadnought
Price: $1,999.00

The classic Hummingbird acoustic guitar originated in the early 1960's as one of Gibson's first acoustic guitars ever produced.
The modern Hummingbird Pro Acoustic-Electric retains all of the classic sound that has made this guitar such a hit while adding some new electronics which will maximize the tonal qualities of this instrument. The Hummingbird has more recently been a favorite of Gram Parsons and Keith Richards.
First, the guitar is styled in the classic dreadnought shape which sets this instrument apart from the traditional style which Gibson is used to having. Therefore, this guitar should appeal more to the players interested in rhythm section playing rather than those who will be doing lots of lead parts, as it is more difficult for a players to climb the neck up to the higher frets (12 and above) with a square shoulder shape of the dreadnought instrument.
While Gibson suggests the price of this instrument should be around $1999, it can be found at other retailers for less. Below are some Ebay results showing just how much less people are willing to sell these guitars:

The Hummingbird Pro Acoustic-Electric guitar is built using some pretty unique and more rare woods. The gorgeous top is made from Sitka spruce (very soft but has a great tone to it), while the back and sides are classic mahogany, a heavier wood choice but results in the deep resonating tones which make playing and listening to it a joy.
The fingerboard of the Hummingbird Pro is also full of rich details which are distinctly Gibsonesque, if that is even a word. The neck is rosewood with hand cut inlays made of mother of pearl surrounded by creamy binding in generous portions.
The real magic of why the Hummingbird Pro Acoustic-Electric sounds so great lies under the surface. Each piece of internal bracing has been hand carved and scalloped in order to maximize the sound for deep bass with cutting treble.
As for electrical components, Gibson has chosen to use Element ES Active acoustic pickup system from L.R. Baggs which do these find instrument justice and properly amplify the electric signal without taking away anything tonally. For hardware, Grover Rotomatic tuners keep the guitar in perfect tune even after heavy playing.
The Hummingbird Pro Acoustic-Electric from Gibson has become a classic for a reason- it combines seriously good looks with great playability and overall sound which is perfectly suited to many genres of music.
