Gibson Les Paul Sucks?

No way in hell. For those who are unfamiliar 9we don't really know how this would be humanly possible), the Gibson Electric Guitar company has been making their famous "Les Paul" model since the late 1950's and it has become perhaps the most famous electric guitar in history for one reason- it has a combination of sound, playability, and looks which has been a favorite amongst professional players around the globe.

Gibson Les Paul guitars are constructed, for the most part, out of solid mahogany. This creates a guitar that is much heavier than the competition (some Gibson's can be close to 10lbs) but allows for a robust sound with singing sustain that never ends. This effect is especially noticeable on Semi-Hallow Gibson guitars, such as the Gibson Custom ES-137 or Gibson ES which use a solid brick of mahogany in the semi hallow compartment under the bridge of the instrument. This has been popular amongst blues and jazz players who seek a fat sound with easy playability.

Gibson does not make their own hardware, like some guitar manufacturers, but has stuck to using some incredible components, regardless. Gibson uses Grover Locking tuners and knobs as well as Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop tail pieces. These tuners are legendary and are known for keeping the guitar in tune even after heavy bending or hard playing. The stop tail hardware allows for quick changing of strings in situations where they are broken, a player just slips the strings in the behind in a fast fashion.

Perhaps the second most important aspect of Les Paul guitars is the electronical components which are probably just as important as the wood itself. Gibson, depending on the model of Les Paul, uses different variations of the same theme- Humbucker pickups. Gibson preferes the Humbuckers because they are low noise but can run hot when pushed and give a round and robust sound that can be filled with cutting low end. That sound is well suited for a number of genres of music, including rock, blues, jazz, folk, and funk.

Gibson has continually sought to make the Les Paul line of guitars appeal to a wider and wider range of players and throughout the years we have seen countless Custom shop variations of the Gibson Les Paul Standard, such as the Classic, Custom Shop, Standard, Studio, Les Paul Special, and Artist Models (such as Slash, Jimmy Page, Etc.). With each of these different models Gibson alters the electronics primarily as well as the body and look of the instrument.

Needless to say, Gibson Les Paul will continue to evolve into the future. Most recently Gibson has released the high tech Gibson Les Paul Robot Guitar, which comes with USB connections as well as fully automatic tuning pegs which can quickly and accurately tune your guitar in a matter of seconds by activating a switch. While this sounds like science fiction, the Robot Guitars have been selling out on a national level.

When choosing a Gibson Les Paul, the best thing to do is visit your local music store (Guitar Center, Daddy's) and start playing different Gibson guitars, not just the Les Paul models, but others such as SG, ES series, and hallow guitars. By playing these different instruments you will get to feel how it reaction to your playing and if the sound suits your personal style. While the look of the guitar is important, it should be second to the sound and play of the guitar, as each various wildly at times.
